Treat an unfamiliar fabric as a question
Velvet-like pile, decorative stitching and older upholstery can be difficult to identify from a single photograph. Show the whole piece, a close view of the fabric and any label underneath. If you inherited the furniture or do not know its material, say so. A confident guess can be less useful than an honest gap in the information.

Point out worn arms, loose seams, fading or previous repairs so these are not mistaken for removable dirt. We will discuss suitability and limitations before the work is agreed. Avoid using a stronger household product to test a stain in preparation. After the clean
